Hi. Today I will be sharing about the novels that I usually read :)
The novels that I read are mostly from Taiwan, which was influenced by my friend since Form 2. At that time, we had a sudden craze about novels. We bought novels for collections, borrowed novels from each other, had discussion and shared opinions about the storyline, it was really fun!
Everyone had their own favourite book author at that time (because of individuality problem :P). Mine was jht, but the most mainstream book author was no doubt, Giddens Ko.
Giddens.
He is currently the most popular and successful book author in Taiwan. His nickname in Chinese means "nine knives", which he got it from his friends during high school. He started his career since 2000, which he first published online. Until now he have already written over 60 novels, some of them were filmed into dramas, movies, theater performances and even online games!
One of the most popular novel that he wrote.
In year 2010, he became the director for his movie "You Are the Apple of My Eye" (which is the novel shown above). The story is actually based on his real life during his time at high school, which he went after this particular girl for 8 years. This novel was the all-time-favourite for the readers and the movie was also a hit.
So, what makes it sopopular? It is all because of the story which resonates with our lives. Anyone of us will surely have the same experience, no matter during high school or other times - falling in love with this one and only special person who once meant the whole world to you. It reminds people of the good old days, those sweet memories that we can never forget during our most energetic, exciting and interesting stage in our lives.
"You Are the Apple of My Eye"
Giddens also took a step further recently by publishing all his novels for free as an e-book application. Readers from now on do not need to go to the bookstores to buy his novels anymore! He made this application not only because of the change of reading habits due to technology, it is also because people can find lots of online version for free, so why not just create an official app for it? But I still prefer the hard copy of the book, the smell and the feel of it. It is also a form of love and support from me to the author! :D
All the novels for free!!
Enough about Giddens. Let's talk about the differences between the novels here and the novels in Taiwan.
We can actually see small differences between them. Firstly, the novels in Taiwan are all in Traditional Chinese, which the characters are more complex than Modern Chinese. It is also because of their national language in Taiwan.
Secondly, the words and sentences in the book are printed vertically. We will need to read the sentence from up to down, then left to right. The vertical format is somehow the same as the books back in the ancient time of China, but modernized because initially books were read from right to left.
Although some of the books selling here are more pricey because of the shipping fees, but most people here in our country still have the habit of bringing them home for own collection. As we all know that e-books has become the current trend but the hard copy of books will never die because good books are always worth the price :)
Since my hometown is very near to Singapore, I shall talk about the various magazines published in Singapore. And since there are so many magazines available in Singapore, I am only focusing on the magazines published by Mediacorp - the largest media broadcaster and provider in Singapore.
1980
Launch of Radio and TV guide
Rolling off the presses for the very first time in 1980, the Radio and TV Times became an important source of weekly radio and television programme schedules for Singaporeans. First published in English, then Chinese, these magazines also served up local and international entertainment news and trivia. They have grown to be today's best-selling 8DAYS and i-Weekly magazines.
14 Feb 2005
International and regional publications added
MediaCorp's publishing arm, MediaCorp Publishing, expanded its range of titles to include several international and regional titles. Among these were Singapore's No. 1 men's magazine, FHM, the local edition of an international franchise spanning 27 countries. The stable of titles also encompassed parenting magazine Mother & Baby as well as Asian Diver, a regional publication distributed in 16 countries.
Here are some of the most popular and best-selling magazines in Singapore:
i-WEEKLY.
i-WEEKLY - Singapore’s best-read magazine for the past three decades, i-weekly is a 2-in-1 value-for-money delight each week. Insider scoops on local and regional stars, TV and movie updates, the latest in lifestyle trends, hotspots, malls and restaurants – they’re all here in this Chinese-language weekly, along with each week’s much-anticipated drama synopses.
8 DAYS.
8 DAYS - Singapore’s definitive pop/culture navigator, 8 DAYS is consistently Singapore’s best-selling English language magazine and the go-to guide for showbiz and lifestyle news, gossip, the latest in food, shopping, health and wellness, along with authoritative movie reviews, TV and music features.
MANJA.
MANJA - Singapore’s best-selling Malay entertainment and lifestyle magazine. Packed with celebrities’ update and discerning tips for the urban Malays.
STYLE:
STYLE: - Singapore’s fashion, beauty and lifestyle magazine. Positioned as the fashion guide for independent, sophisticated Singapore women.
STYLE: Interactive is the digital version of Singapore's top fashion and beauty title. With STYLE: on the iPad, you can now enjoy your monthly reading fix on the go! "
My favourite magazine of all is the i-Weekly. It is only available in Singapore. I love the gossip news which are very exclusive and interviews with different artiste every week. Other than that, the magazine also includes lifestyle, fashion, and good food around Singapore. With a reasonable price we can get lots of information just in one magazine.
The most special part of all is it has a part at the last few pages of the magazine, featuring the synopsis of the local dramas in Singapore for the week. It is very cool to read before we watch it on television, but of course it kills our curiosity because we can anticipate what will happen in the drama.
In general, magazines not only provide us juicy news but the most important part is it teaches us simple skills, for example the makeup and hair tutorials in fashion magazines, the cooking recipes provided in some of the magazines and also some useful tips for our daily lives. To conclude, magazines not only provide us entertainment but also benefits people with their own way :)
Historical Importance of the Berlin Wall:
The Berlin Wall was the physical division between West Berlin and East Germany. However, it was also the symbolic boundary between democracy and Communism during the Cold War.
Dates:
August 13, 1961 -- November 9, 1989
Also Known As:
Berliner Mauer (in German)
Overview of the Berlin Wall:
The Berlin Wall was erected in the dead of night and for 28 years kept East Germans from fleeing to the West. Its destruction, which was nearly as instantaneous as its creation, was celebrated around the world.
West
Germany, late 1950s.
With the
help and support of its occupying powers, West Germany set up a capitalist
society and experienced such a rapid growth of their economy that it became
known as the “economic miracle”. With hard work, individuals living in West
Germany were able to live well, buy gadgets and appliances, and to travel as
they wished. Jane was here, waiting for Mike's arrival.
East
Germany, late 1950s.
It was nearly the opposite for Mike. Since the
Soviet Union had viewed their zone as a spoil of war, the Soviets pilfered
factory equipment and other valuable assets from their zone and shipped them
back to the Soviet Union. When East Germany became its own country, it was
under the direct influence of the Soviet Union and thus a Communist society was
established. The economy dragged and individual freedoms were severely
restricted.
They could only meet each other every fortnight
because both of them were living at the different side of Germany. They were grateful for each meeting, at the same time living in fear, the fear of being apart from each other. The only thing they
could do was to cherish the little time they had together.
Soon, many people living in East Germany wanted out. No longer able to stand
the repressive living conditions of East Germany, they would pack up their bags
and head to West Berlin. Although some of them would be stopped on their way, hundreds
and thousands of others made it across the border. Once across, these refugees
were housed in warehouses and then flown to West Germany. Many of those who
escaped were young, trained professionals. By the early 1960s, East Germany was
rapidly losing both its labor force and its population.
12th August 1961
“Let’s do
it.” said Mike to his friends - Peter, William and Harris. Finally, after a long discussion, Mike
decided to leave here and start a new life with Jane. It
was hard for him to make this decision as he cannot bear to leave his life since young here. But he could no longer
stand it anymore, no freedom, and being separated with his loved ones. “ Tomorrow morning, we shall leave this place.”
He didn't know that his biggest nightmare was coming true. Having already lost 2.5
million people, the East Germany desperately needed to stop this mass emigration.
The obvious leak was the easy access East Germans had to West Berlin. Desperate
to keep its citizens, East Germany decided to build a wall to prevent them from
crossing the border. The midnight just before the date of escape for Mike(August
12th -13th), trucks with soldiers and construction workers rumbled through East
Berlin. While most Berliners were sleeping, these crews began tearing up
streets that entered into West Berlin, dug holes to put up concrete posts, and
strung barbed wire all across the border between East and West Berlin.
Telephone wires between East and West Berlin were also cut.
No longer
could East Berliners cross the border. No longer could the approximately 60,000
commuters head to West Berlin for well-paying jobs. No longer could families,
friends, and lovers cross the border to meet their loved ones. Whichever side
of the border one went to sleep on during the night of August 12, they were
stuck on that side for decades.
13th August 1961
Mike and his
friends had the shocked of their life when they woke up that morning. After he slowly realized this horrifying truth, Mike quickly ran to the place where he first planned
to meet Jane. Many people were standing by the wall, searching their families, children and loved ones. It was the saddest scene Mike ever saw. “Jane, Jane!” shouted Mike along the Berlin Wall as he couldn't find
Jane. But as last, he found her. Tears were all over Jane’s face. “Mike, I am here!”
her hand was desperately waving towards to Mike, grabbing his attention. They
were only one wall apart from each other, but their distance was far away.
“Wait for
me Jane. I promise you that I will find my way and get through this wall. Wait
for me.”
“Please be
safe no matter what. I will always be here waiting for you.”
The journey
of Mike’s escape has started since that day. Some Berliners threw a rope over the Wall and
climbed up. Others rammed a truck or bus into the Wall and making a run for it.
Their attempts were successful. But for some who weren't that lucky, their
escaped became suicidal. Mike waited patiently for his turn, he didn't want to act rashly. He must plan
well for the sake of his life, and for the girl he loved, Jane. There must be a best way to escape.
But day by
day, the wall grows taller, broader, and more deadly – with watchtowers,
electrified fences, alarm wires, dogs and armed guards ready to shoot at anyone
who touches the Berlin Wall. The escape attempts were more complex.
17th August 1962
Four of them
gathered by the Wall. Peter and William couldn't wait anymore. “We've already waited for a year. Isn't that long enough? The more we
wait, the lesser the chance to escape!” said Peter. Without hesitating, they ran
towards the Wall with the intention on scaling it. Mike tried to stop them but failed.
Guards were by the Wall, they could easily lose their lives! “Boom!” A loud
sound of gunshot was heard. Mike quickly opened his eyes to see what was
happening. William managed to reach the Wall and successfully scaled it. But Peter,
he was not so lucky. As he was about to scale the wall, a border guard opened
fire.
“Peter!!
Don’t risk your life! Come back!!”
But he didn’t.
He
continued to climb the Wall, but ran out of energy just as he reached the top.
He then tumbled back onto the East German side of the Wall. To the shock of the
world, Peter was just left there. The East German guards did not shoot him
again nor did they go to his aid. Peter shouted in agony for nearly an hour. He
was bled to death. The East German guards carried off his body. He became the
50th person to die at the Berlin Wall and a symbol of the struggle for freedom.
This
incident had become a lesson for Mike and Harris. They couldn’t afford to risk
their lives anymore. Although people died during escape, but the Berliners didn’t
give up their chance to escape for freedom. Some people hid in car trunks,
hijacked a subway train, swing over the Wall hanging from a makeshift pulley,
and even fly across the border in a home-made hot air balloon.
“Let’s try
the Checkpoint Charlie.” said Mike to Harris. It was the main access point for
Allied personnel and Westerners to cross the border. Many people were begging the guards to let them cross over the border. Of course they only had a very low
chance to cross through that checkpoint, it was nearly impossible. Suddenly, Mike with his sharp eyes felt something was amiss somewhere near from the checkpoint. He
saw a guard moving suspiciously, was he trying to escape too?.
“Harris, finally
here come’s our chance.” said Mike.
Mike and
Harris quickly ran towards the guard and caught him. They brought him away from
the crowd. The guard was scared to death, seems like he was quite a timid
person. “What were you trying to do?” asked Mike.
“I want to escape from here
too! I cannot stand this place anymore!” said the Guard who was trembling while
answering the questions. His name was Jack.
“I was
forced to become a guard of the Berlin Wall. I hated here. There was no freedom
at all, even for us. I see people died from escaping every day, it was such a
tragedy. I couldn't take it anymore.” Jack calmed down after a few minutes.
“Great! Let’s escape from here together!” said Harris. “You can help us.”
“Alright.
Since I am already caught by both of you, I will help you two to escape. I
needed helping hands too.” said Jack.
“So what’s
your plan?” asked Mike.
“I am currently
building a tunnel. It’s located at one of the basement of the building in East
Berlin. With the help of both of you, the tunnel can be completed faster. It is
our only hope.”
And so
they started their work in building the tunnel. It was a tough time for them. There were times where Mike felt like giving up, it seems like digging a tunnel takes forever. They have already lost track of the time. Jane’s photo and their promise to each other was his motivation.
Harris and Jack also gave each other encouragement too, three of them worked all day long at the tunnel, looking forward to the day of freedom.
22th March 1962
Finally
after seven months, the tunnel was done. When the first time they saw the
sunlight, their eyes could barely open. “We made it!!” they cheered happily and
hugged each other for their success.
On the
other hand, Jane was always there, waiting for Mike almost every day at the usual spot they met.
She prayed for Mike’s safety, and every time she heard
the sound of gun shooting and the news of people died during escape, her heart
stopped for a second. She cried, she was worried. But of course,
she kept her promise. She was waiting for Mike, and there was the place where Mike saw her.
After separating from each other for 4 years, they were reunited.
9th November 1989
On the evening,
a sudden announcement was made by East German government official that the
borders were open after 27 years. People from East German approached the border and indeed
found that the border guards were letting people cross. Very quickly, the
Berlin Wall was full with people from both sides. Some began chipping at the
Berlin Wall with hammers and chisels. There was a huge celebration along the
Berlin Wall, with people hugging, kissing, singing, cheering, and crying.
There stood
Mike and Jane by the Berlin Wall, the Wall that separated them for years. Now
both of them were married with two kids. Harris, Jack and William eventually found well-paid jobs and led a new life in the West Germany. They live happily ever after, with
their story of the Berlin Wall forever etched in their hearts.
Everybody dreams, who doesn't? Remember the days where we daydream in class, thinking of how would we be in the future. For me, a dream is something that is more to unrealistic, which is not that easy to achieve (or even impossible to achieve). If it is something that can be achieved then why should we dream about it? It should be a goal our lives, not a dream.
My dream is just a simple one - to have my very own recording studio and music production. Sounds more like a goal huh? It is not hard to achieve if you really work and plan on it. But actually what I really want to do is something more than that - a studio for all. Singing is a very common hobby among people. Some people, lucky enough, they became popular music stars. People can get famous through many ways - singing competitions, video sharing, social networking and more. But still there are many people put there who sing well. Some don't even realize that they have a beautiful voice, some wanted to be a singer, some chose to just lead a plain simple life. People born in harsh environment, it is a luxury for them to even dream.
I would like to offer them the chance to realize their
dream, to have them record their very own album. Many could only be a part-time singer in a cafe because they don't have the chance. Sometimes I feel that their beautiful voice should be heard. My point to have this studio is not let them be famous. I cannot help them to become a
music star, but i can give them the opportunity to at least have that
experience once in a lifetime. My studio is for all the dreamers out there. No matter you have the talent to sing or not, as long as you dream to, I will offer you the chance. Who says you will need to have a flair in singing only you can sing?
So what's the purpose of doing all these? Actually I would love to capture the hidden beautiful voice in the world. I am not only realizing my own dream, but also helping others to realize their's too! It's really meaningful for me - make an impact in other people's life. Who knows someday they might be discovered and become a future star? I would also like to build up their confidence, telling them that never give up on your dreams. People laugh at your dream, so what? As long as you are happy with your life. So here I present the first stepping stone for them - The S.F.A Studio :)
Photographs need angles, so do videos. I always wonder how to make more "professional looking" videos. Other than editing the video with effects, the other answer is - camera shots and angles. Before that I didn't notice and think about all these, but now I realize that it is very essential in a short film or a movie. Every scene is planned to make perfect.
So our idea started with a scary theme - ghost. Our group wanted to create something like a horror comedy, we thought it was fun in the process of filming. I didn't agree much - not because I mind being the ghost, it's just that I don't want to create something that will scare myself.
We received feedback that a ghost doesn't have to be ghostly looking etc. So from that point, we improvised our storyline. It's really hard to get a storyline which every member can agree to. In the end our storyline can be said to be completely different from the initial idea. Good vs evil is the main contrast in our video.
Throughout the video filming, I should say that my favourite camera shot is the over shoulder shots (OSS). It really gives the audience a clear focus and a comfortable feeling.
Other than the camera shots that we learned in class, I found out that other shots used by some movie makers were rather interesting.
Canted angles:
Visually striking, emphasize a sense of disorientation or alienation in the subject of the shot.
For example: Slumdog Millionaire (2008) by Danny Boyle.
Shoot Inside or Through Something:
Shots that show the subject of the shot reflected through a medium, such as a rear-view mirror or a pair of glasses.
Visually striking, deepen or break the illusory reality of the film.
We will be using this camera shot in one of our scene by using a car, sTayTuNed.
It is definitely not easy to create something that is projected in our mind to a screen. We are all lacking experiences as it is the first time we are making a short film, and also I realize that there's a lot that we cannot do in reality. But still I look forward to our group's end product. Sorry if we did it badly, I sincerely hope that you all will enjoy the film :)
Random facts #1.
I do not read the newspaper often just because flipping pages of it will make my fingers black and dirty. I can only touch other things after washing my hands to prevent them from getting dirty. I think it's very troublesome so until now I still don't have the habit to read the newspaper.
Random facts #2.
I will always choose to read the entertainment section of the newspaper first. I also like to choose the newspaper printed on the better quality paper such as Metro in The Star where all the interesting features stories were published and Taylor's Inkslinger.
Random facts #3. The
Chinese newspaper which is still using broadsheet was so huge that I read it on the floor.
Random facts #4. The first chinese newspaper that I read was Nan Yang Siang Pau (although Sin Chew Daily was more popular). The only English newspaper that I like is The Star, which was mostly influenced by my parents because they cannot read Chinese words. Random facts #5. My family has been reading The Star newspaper since I was born. Although I don't read the newspaper but it is always there for me. I witness the changes of the The Star newspaper from broadsheets to tabloids. I felt weird initially but still get used to it eventually. The design and layout of The Stars newspaper were also different back then.
Random facts #6. What I like about newspaper is that they are eco-friendly and recyclable. Every Sunday I will see my mum using the old newspaper to wrap the vegetables before putting them into the fridge :p
Random facts #7. My friends and I were on the front page of a section in the New Straits Time because of the school event of the Chinese Cultural Month. It was the first time for me to appear in the newspaper and I bought it specially to keep it as a collection. Online version: http://www.smksp1.webs.com/nst_2010.htm
Random facts #8.
When I was in primary school, my friend and I entered a competition where we need to collect as many news as we can with a specific theme. We collected lots of news from loads of old newspaper, cut it nicely and pasted it on colour papers with pretty captions and design. We won the 2nd price in the competition :)
Random facts #9.
I always loved the Kee's World comic strips that were published everyday in The Star's Section Two. It was a must read everyday for me!
Nevertheless, the newspapers still play an important role in people's lives, even for people like me who don't read it everyday. The newspaper as a credible source of information will not be dying out anytime soon and will continue to serve us a vital type of mass media for many more years to come.
Social Learning - Cultivation - Media Dependency. Three theories closely related to each other, slowing influencing people nowadays which are depending more and more on
the media to satisfy their needs. We rely on the media, we began to have wrong perceptions in the reality results in stereotyping and unnecessary fears, we copy and learn what we saw from the media without realizing it.
In the advertising industry, the advertisers produce commercials that are made to serve and create awareness among society from time to time. Applying modern theories in their commercials will create resonance in people thus more
effective and leaves people with deep impressions.
The advertiser portrays the lives of people who are suffering because of smoking. Everyone knows that smoking is bad for health, the advertiser uses this point and further cultivates among smokers about the serious effect that will impact their lives. The point of view from a mother is also a strong point because we as a child can feel it and it's like a wake-up call for us.
What is your feeling after watching the commercial? Did you teared or did it made you think twice before you decide to smoke? This is where the theory works.
Just to share my experience. Recently I went to
the cinema and watched this movie call “Dredd”. The whole movie was basically
very violent, I wonder why is it uncensored or uncut. If you like to see cool
weapons, cruel treatments, bomb explosion or blood and bodies lying here and
there, go ahead and watch.
Not only
weapons, the movie also introduce a kind of drug called “Slo-Mo”, which makes the brain feel as if time had passed like 1% of it's normal speed, so sick. Despite the violence,
cruelness and bloodiness, the movie was not bad for me not because of the storyline, it's because the cool technologies, graphics and actions scenes.
But all
awhile in the cinema, I was thinking that how would this movie influence a
person by showing all these violence. If someone is over-exposed to these kind
of movie and do not know how to think wisely, I cannot think of the
consequences and impact towards the person and what kind of crazy things he/she
will do to the society. Although people argue that media is not the main factor
that contributes but it is still a factor effecting.
And to be
frank, all the movie trailer shown before the movie starts were all violent too.
What is happening to our world today?! Mean and scary world.
Taboo?? Questions appeared in my mind until I saw the box of the game. I recognized it immediately because
one of my friend owns this. The purpose of this game is to test our ability to think and relate in another way(I guess?), so everyone was required to play at least once to experience it ourselves.
I actually
felt nervous standing in front of people, like I always do. My mind was
literally blank but luckily I still managed to think of something. My eyes were
busy looking at the 5 words which were forbidden to say, the brain was constantly
processing of other words that can describe the answer and coordinates with the
mouth which is trying to speak what the brain had processed. The ears were also
searching for the correct answer when everyone was guessing the answer. I
thought it was amazing because the whole class was filled with various sound and voice yet we can still hear the correct answer.
In order
for my friends to understand better, I also need to think on how to say it in
proper English. So the brain was constantly thinking about many things that I
felt a bit blank. Although I managed to speak what I wanted but my thoughts did notlink well with what I spoke, unlike people who have a very good thought
process, they can speak with a clear mind and fully understand what is going
on.
The game Taboo is closely related with our blog assignment because a lot
of critical thinking is needed. For me, I need almost one whole day to finish a
blog post, because I tend to think a little slower. Ideas come to me slow
unless I see something that inspires me. After I get the idea, I need to rearrange
my thoughts which took the most time, and lastly, the way I present my thoughts
and corrections for the English grammar.
I guess
more thinking is needed to improve our thought process, where people always say
“practice makes perfect”. If you get used to it, there shouldn't be much
problem. If we are good in thinking and relating, the way we see things will be
different and the way we think will be more flexible. I guess this benefits us
in our communication skills too.
I really
had a great time laughing together with friends and of course I enjoyed myself
and had lots of fun with Taboo! Fun day indeed :D
Another mind-blowing movie - Delicatessen, a black comedy directed by Marc Caro and Jean-Pierre Jeunet, nominated and won several important awards.
The setting
of the story was in post-apocalyptic France where good food was rare. The many events
of the story were mostly in the apartment building, which was owned by the butcher,
Clapet (Jean-Claude Dreyfus). He always sells this very special kind of “meat” to
his tenants the next day whenever someone went missing mysteriously. One day, a former clown, Louison (Dominique Pinon), saw
an advertisement on the newspaper went there for a job. He began to win the
heart of the tenants, and also fell in love with the butcher’s daughter, Julie
(Marie-Laure Dougnac). The story further develops where the truth started to
reveal and Julie tries to search for help and save her beloved man from the clutches of her father,
and they both tries to run away from him.
I shall say that the movie trailer is absolutely brilliant. It is just something like a teaser but not revealing too much about the movie. You wouldn't even know what will the story be about because it is not really related to the story of the movie. Unlike some movie trailers nowadays, you would probably guessed the whole story of the movie before you watch it in the cinema. Who would miss a movie with such an interesting trailer like this?
The
storyline of the movie was unpredictable, which created suspense in the movie.
In order to know what was actually going on, people will have to keep on
watching the movie until the end. The movie had succeeded in bringing out the curiosity
and interest of people towards the movie. The actors in the movie also did a
good job with their characters.
Magical bubbles!
First visit to Julie's apartment.
Searching for the faulty bed spring.
GIVE ME YOUR GRAINS!
Musical saw and Cello.
What I liked
about the movie is the character and the presented in the movie, especially Aurore who tried
many different ways to commit suicide but eventually failed in a funny way. The
budding romance between Louison and Julie was my favourite too!
On the
other hand, what I dislike about the movie was the disturbing scenes, for
example at the starting part of the movie; a frightened man hiding in the bin,
somehow waiting for his doom. Then comes the butcher with an evil face and huge
eyes, holding a chopper in his hand..
You can't run away from me!
MEAT.
To be
frank, I didn’t enjoy much throughout the movie except the few funny scenes because most of the disturbing
scenes freaked me out. I was also trying hard to understand the movie, because
of the language barrier and my weak understanding towards the movie. So I
should say the experience was unpleasant for me to digest the content of the
movie.
As a
conclusion, it is still a worth-to-watch movie. If you are curious enough to know
what’s all about the movie, be sure to check it out! Your time will definitely
not be wasted on this movie. Good luck and enjoy! :p
So today my group of friends and I went to Setapak for our moral project, and we used the LRT as one of our transportation. It was my first time travelling with the LRT in Malaysia and it was kind of a new experience for me.
I was so sad that I had motion sickness so I couldn't read in the LRT while other friends were studying lectures notes T_____T. Of course I got bored and I started to observe people in the LRT.
It was surprising to see that people actually read books in LRT. And then later on I saw someone standing reading the newspaper. I felt he was a hero O.O, and this was where I started to find the tabloid newspaper useful! Other people were either using their gadgets or with their earphones listening to music.
I shall say that the LRT in Malaysia and the MRT in Singapore are very different. Basically every Singaporean in the MRT will be using their iPhones and most of them will be plucking in their earphones #likeaboss. Oops :x
But it's sad to say that most of the people in the LRT are doing nothing. In my opinion, it is better to use that free time reading something useful, unless you are feeling sleepy or having motion sickness like me. But of course it still depends on the individual.
The above bar chart is just a rough analysis of mine through my observation. I assume that the people with their gadgets are using the media such as Facebook, Twitter, Whatsapp and Youtube. This is where the Dependency Theory happens. It is also related to the Uses and Gratifications Approach, as people are using the media in a cognitive way. Some people also use it for diversion and withdrawal purpose. This is where the bad attitude develops because people are avoiding themselves from letting out their seats for the people who really need it.
So I took the chance to interview Ling who was sitting just beside me as she said it was difficult to concentrate and read in the LRT. It was just a simple question asking about what she was going to do since she couldn't concentrate. The answer I got was: to listen to music, to take out her smart phone and to do whatever thing it could do, most probably texting with people, viewing social network sites and playing games.
That concludes the Dependency Theory, which applies for me too. Viewing Facebook, Twitter and Instagram has become a daily basis for me, especially when I have nothing else to do. Even when I am busy with my work I still tend to get distracted.
And yeah, while I was typing the last sentence of my blog post, I was holding my phone with another hand. DUH.
As you all
know I am staying in U-Residence, a lot of people have been asking me about my
room and other stuff. So I am here to answer all your questions and end your curiosity! :D
I am
currently staying in a Twin-sharing room for RM920 a month, which is expensive
compared to the rent outside Taylor’s University. I decided to stay here
because I am unfamiliar with the surrounding places here so it is more convenient and safer for me to stay
in campus for the time being.
Because of
my room type, I do not have pantry or fridge. No cold drinks for me
:( The room is considered small for two people. Basically, I have a bed, a
table with bookshelf, a wardrobe and shared bathroom. And yes, we have air-conditioner and water heater here.
I am cool.
Ma bed if you are interested.
Le desk.
Great place to store your foodstuff :D
Mini library with no books.
Unglamorous overview.
Wardrobe.
More than enough to stuff my clothes.

The good
thing for choosing U-Residence is that we save a lot of travelling time. We don't have to get up early for class and therefore we can afford longer sleeping hours. We also do not need to
worry about traffic jams, unless there is a serious human traffic in school :p
Staying in
the campus also gives us a chance to make full use of the University facilities,
for example the library and the 24/7 study room. If you have problems sleeping
at night, feel free to sit by the lake. It is definitely a good place to put on your thinking cap. It is more convenient for us to spend time at the Uni-gym too :)
The Management of U-Residence really looks after their residents as they will plan activities for them from time to time. I think it benefits the international students here because they are new to Malaysia. By joining those activities they know more about Malaysia and our culture here.
So do you think staying here is good? Well maybe not.
One of the many disadvantages of staying here is that we do not have drinking water source
in the room. At first I bought water from store 7-11 which is slightly
more expensive than the supermarket. Eventually, I fill up my water bottle everyday
at the water dispenser beside Student Life Centre, which is a walking
distance from my room. To overcome my laziness, I will make sure that I fill
up more water bottles during the weekends.
The room does
not provide a place for you to dry your clothes, which means we need to bring our
clothes to the laundry shop downstairs. I refuse to spend too much money on my
laundry so I have created a little space in the bathroom to hang my washed
clothes.
Brilliant :p
The food
choices for students who are staying here are very limited too. Unless you have a
car or take a bus ride to Sunway Pyramid for your dinner. If not, basically you
are eating more or less the same food everyday.
The most depressing part is that we do not have any sort of entertainment here. No televisions, no games such as Angry Birds, Diamond Dash and other games for students, no doubt they are harmless for students. And seriously the I-Xcess in my hostel room is terrible. I cannot connect it to my lappy!! Y U NO LET ME PLAY! D:
The one
thing that I do not like about my room is the privacy issue. If you
pull up the curtain, people can see clearly what you are doing in the
room, especially at night when the lights in our room is on. And the block opposite my room is the boy’s residence. But, if you pull down the curtain, it will block the natural light coming into your room which makes
the room dark.
I am watching you.
I can also see the elevator through my bathroom window. The residents while waiting for the elevator can see you pinching pimples in front of the bathroom mirror so make sure no ugly face while looking at the mirror! Greet me if you want to, most probably I will show you an annoyed face :O.
Hi from the lift.
Not to
mention Block A3 and A4, the boys are using the same lift. It is easy for the boys staying
in A3 to come over to the girls' block because both blocks have the same access. For safety purposes, we always make
sure that we lock our rooms. I
think the CCTV does not help much. Frankly speaking, it is actually not a serious problem if you don't let your thinking runs wild.
If I were
to choose again, I would not consider renting a room at U-Residence based on my experience. Most of our friends who are staying here will probably give a negative answer too. Although staying here has its own benefits but I still prefer to stay outside.
To my mind, it is not advisable for a Malaysian to rent a room here unless he/she really needs it. Why not travel a little and save some money for other purposes? But for international students, it will be good to stay here as a starting point.
Overall, U-Residence is still considered a good place to stay, we have a great environment in Taylor's Lakeside compared to outside! 4 out of 5 stars for U-Residence! *Clap clap* *More photos of my room will be uploaded soon! :) *Last batch of photos added and edited on 28th of September, 12.25pm.
Hi everyone! Today I will be sharing about my favourite music genre - R&B/Soul. The reason why I like this genre is because of this particular singer. It's because of him I get to know about this genre, which I think most of the people are unfamiliar with.
His version of "You're The Sunshine of My Life" was originated by his favourite master, Stevie Wonder, which is also a R&B singer.
The reason why R&B/Soul attracts me so much is because of its soothing and relaxing music. If you close your eyes and listen closely to the music, you can hear the rhythm of the drums which gives the whole song a flexible and comfortable beat. Unlike normal songs, the way of singing in R&B songs is unique. It is to bring out the character of the music genre. R&B is also something similar with Jazz.
He further promotes about Blues, Gospel and Rock in his album at year 2011, which is a little different from his previous album which focus on R&B/Soul. "Fewpeopleunderstandthat Bluesand GospelaretheoriginofR&Band Soul." he said. The song below can also be said as cross-genre, you can hear different elements working together in the song.
In my opinion, true music is really hard to find nowadays because of commercialization in the music industry. That's what makes R&B/Soul so special and stands out from all other music genre - originality.
